Orchestral Force: Star Wars Comes Alive at Walt Disney Concert Hall

This past weekend, the Walt Disney Concert Hall hosted a transcendent celebration of Star Wars, blending John Williams’ iconic score with the artistry of the LA Phil and the Cal State Fullerton University Singers. Under the inspired baton of conductor Sarah Hicks, the event delivered an immersive experience that brought the saga’s music and visuals together in perfect harmony.

Audience members, adorned in Jedi robes, Sith capes, and the unmistakable hairstyles of Princess Leia, filled the hall with an infectious energy. The evening was introduced by Anthony Daniels, the actor behind the beloved droid C-3PO and the sole performer to appear in all nine films of the saga. With charm and humor, Daniels narrated the chronological journey through George Lucas’ epic tale, interwoven with meticulously edited montages of cinematic highlights.

Produced by Kevin Kurtz, Jamie Richardson, and Laura Gibson, these visual sequences captured the essence of Star Wars—from the haunting beauty of Luke Skywalker gazing at Tatooine’s twin suns to the dramatic clashes of lightsabers in pivotal battles. Paired with Williams’ score, the montages achieved a seamless blend of sight and sound, evoking the grandeur and emotion of the saga’s most iconic moments.

The program’s highlights ranged from the powerful opening fanfare to the evocative “Dark Forces Conspire” and “Dark Times Return,” where the University Singers lent their voices to elevate the compositions to operatic grandeur. The venue’s acoustics enriched the experience, ensuring every note, from the softest string to the mightiest brass, resonated with clarity and depth. The evening culminated with an encore of the main theme, and was met with rapturous standing ovation, affirming that Star Wars remains a cultural touchstone for generations. “The Force” is still with us.
