The Ahmanson Theater is a hub of pulsating energy now that Duel Reality has made its dynamic Los Angeles debut. Presented by the Montreal-based troupe The 7 Fingers and helmed by visionary director Shana Carroll, this daring production reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a fresh twist, integrating acrobatics, dance, and circus elements to infuse the timeless tale with thrilling vitality.

From the moment the audience entered, the minimalist set design—accentuated by stark industrial aesthetics—hinted at the intensity of the evening ahead. Divided into two opposing teams, the performers symbolized the feuding Montagues and Capulets, setting the stage for an exhilarating, high-stakes confrontation. This was not a traditional evening of theater, but a gripping fusion of physicality and drama. Far from a mere retelling, Duel Reality explores the tension between love and conflict through visceral athleticism. The familiarity of Shakespeare’s story is invigorated by the sheer physical prowess of the cast, who use every leap, fall, and tumble to express emotions more powerfully than words alone.
“Dazzling…brings the physical intensity of contemporary circus into the realm of Shakespearean tragedy.”
The show opens with an explosive burst of acrobatic prowess as the rival teams clash in a dazzling display of gravity-defying stunts. The feuds were not merely conveyed through dialogue, but through the daring movements of the performers, who transformed aggression and tenderness into acts of physical beauty. At the heart of this reimagining, Romeo and Juliet’s love story takes on new depth. The chemistry between the leads was palpable, with each acrobatic lift and fall underscoring the fragility of their love. Particularly mesmerizing was their aerial work, where their bodies, entwined mid-air, reflected both the beauty and tragedy of their forbidden relationship.

The production’s visual power was heightened by Alexander Nichols’ lighting design, which featured a pixelated backdrop of geometric patterns that flashed red and blue to symbolize the division between the two warring families. The clever use of checkerboard patterns and projected symbols added another layer of meaning to the already dynamic staging. Composer Colin Gagne’s soundtrack masterfully combined modern rhythms with classical undertones, enhancing both the intensity of the battles and the tenderness between the star-crossed lovers. Far from merely supporting the action, the music drove the emotional pace of the performance, making it an integral part of the experience. Shana Carroll’s choreography blended athleticism with storytelling in seamless harmony. Each movement, from high-flying leaps to subtle gestures of affection, was charged with emotion. Carroll’s direction excelled in bringing the physical intensity of contemporary circus into the realm of Shakespearean tragedy.
A standout element of Duel Reality was its ability to engage the audience, drawing them into the conflict between the two factions. The immersive energy of the performers made the rivalry feel personal, inviting spectators to root for one side or the other as the tension escalated.
