At 61, Seal remains an unparalleled force in the world of live music, offering a concert experience that transcends mere performance. His show at the Hollywood Bowl on August 9th was a testament to his enduring passion and deep connection with his audience. Unlike many artists of his stature, Seal’s interaction with the crowd went beyond the stage. Twice during the evening, he left the comfort of the spotlight to stroll through the box seats, ascending all the way to the nosebleeds. This rare and intimate communion with his fans underscored the mutual affection that defines his performances.

This concert differed from his previous Hollywood Bowl appearance, which leaned heavily on his jazz influences. However, this time, the energy was equally potent, showcasing a dynamic range that captivated the audience from start to finish. The evening began with the remarkable Emily King, a New York-born singer-songwriter whose style evokes comparisons to Corinne Bailey Rae. King, however, brings her own flair with a delightful touch of self-deprecating humor and an undeniable knack for storytelling through her music.

Seal’s 95-minute set was a masterclass in blending the familiar with the new. He delivered timeless hits like “Killer,” “Kiss From a Rose,” and “Crazy,” which electrified the crowd. Yet, it was his introduction of new material that truly bared his soul. Songs such as “AIKIN (All I Know is Now)” invited the audience into his reflective space, exploring themes of living in the moment. “I’ve Been Thinking” offered a poignant critique of modern communication, lamenting the superficiality of texting. Meanwhile, “A Little Lie” delved into his personal struggles with ADHD, portraying it as both a blessing for his creativity and a formidable challenge.

Seal’s performance was nothing short of breathtaking, both in its emotional depth and its physicality. His ability to weave personal narratives into his music while maintaining an infectious energy kept the audience enthralled without pause. The evening was not just a concert but a shared experience—a rare and cherished moment where artist and audience become one, bound by the music and the stories it tells.
